SchengenStay.EU is an independent website built around one job: helping visitors work out how long they can legally stay in the Schengen Area under the 90/180-day short-stay rule. It pairs a free calculator with a library of plain-language guides on the rule, overstays, the Entry/Exit System, ETIAS, and the routes to staying in Europe longer than 90 days.
Who runs this site
The site is run by a small independent team with a background in web development and travel research. It is a personal project, not a law firm, a government body, or an immigration consultancy. We are not affiliated with the European Union, the European Commission, or any member state, and we do not represent or advise on individual immigration cases.

How the calculator works
The calculator implements the same rolling-window method used by the European Commission's official short-stay calculator:
- Dates are handled as whole calendar days in UTC, so time zones do not shift a count.
- Overlapping or back-to-back past trips are merged before counting.
- For each candidate day of a planned stay, the tool checks the 180-day window ending on that day and confirms the total Schengen days do not exceed 90.
- The maximum stay is the last day before that check fails.
- If no days are available on the entry date, the tool searches forward for the first date the window drops below 90 — the earliest re-entry date.
- Entry and exit days are both counted as full days, in line with the Schengen Borders Code.
The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Trip dates you enter are stored in your device's local storage for convenience and are not transmitted to us or anyone else. You can remove them at any time with the Reset all button.
Our editorial team and standards
Every guide is prepared and maintained under the byline SchengenStay.EU Editorial Team. The byline identifies the team responsible for researching the source material, checking calculations, maintaining links and correcting the published page. It does not imply that the team provides legal advice.
- Primary sources first. Guides are checked against official EU and national government material — the Schengen Borders Code, European Commission pages, official EES and ETIAS information, and country-specific travel authorities — which we link at the foot of each article.
- Two visible dates. Every guide shows when its content was updated and when its official sources were last checked. A wording change and a source verification are recorded separately because a page can remain unchanged after a successful source review.
- Examples are recalculated. Worked 90/180 examples are checked day by day, including both entry and exit dates, before publication. Material examples are also compared with the European Commission's official short-stay calculator method.
- Duplicate claims are checked together. When a fact changes, we review the article body, key-fact boxes, tables, FAQs, metadata and structured data so readers and search engines receive the same answer.
- Links are tested. We periodically check outbound sources and replace moved or withdrawn official pages.
- No guarantees. We explain the rule and the arithmetic. We never tell a reader they "will" be admitted or that a specific plan is "safe" — border officers make the final decision.
- Clear separation of information and opinion. Where we describe common traveller strategies (such as alternating Schengen and non-Schengen time), we present them as what people do, with the risks stated, not as advice to follow.
Corrections and updates
If you spot an error, email [email protected] with the page URL, the statement in question and an official source where possible. We check the report against primary material, correct every occurrence of the claim, retest any affected calculation, and update the visible review dates. Material corrections are recorded in the site's changelog.
How the site is funded
SchengenStay.EU is free to use. We intend to cover hosting and development costs through advertising and, in future, may add optional paid tools. Advertising, where present, is clearly distinguishable from editorial content, and advertisers have no influence over what our guides say. Our privacy policy and cookie policy explain what third-party services this involves and how to control them.
