Airport Transit vs Schengen Entry

Layover questions dominate inbox and forum threads because the answer depends on whether you enter the territory, not on how long the connection is. Two hours airside to a non-Schengen flight is not the same as two hours that require passport control, and it is not the same as a flight onward to another Schengen city.

Quick test

  • Stay airside to a non-Schengen destination → usually no stay day.
  • Pass border control, collect bags, or hotel airside exit → stay day.
  • Connect Schengen → Schengen → you are inside; presence counts.
  • Some nationalities need an airport transit visa even airside — separate from 90/180 counting.

International transit area

The transit zone exists so passengers can change aircraft without being admitted. If that is truly where you remain, the stop is generally not a short stay. Signs, staff instructions and your boarding passes matter more than forum anecdotes.

When the layover becomes an entry

Leaving the transit area for any reason — a required terminal transfer through controls, a night in an airport hotel landside, missing a connection and being processed into the country — creates an entry. From that moment the calendar day counts, and so does the eventual exit day.

Schengen-to-Schengen connections

Once you have entered, moving Paris–Munich–Madrid is internal travel. Those days are ordinary presence days even if you never leave the airport buildings.

Airport transit visas

An ATV authorises airside passage for nationalities that need it. It does not authorise sightseeing. Needing an ATV does not automatically mean the layover counts toward 90/180; counting still follows admission to the territory.

If your itinerary is ambiguous, ask the airline whether the connection is airside and whether you will clear immigration. Then log only real entry dates in the calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Does sleeping in the gate area count?

If you never pass border control and remain in the international transit zone, it usually does not. Leaving that zone does.

I flew Dublin–Amsterdam–New York. What counted?

Ireland is outside Schengen. Amsterdam is a Schengen external connection: whether you entered depends on whether you cleared Schengen controls during the transfer.

Do I add layover days manually?

Add calendar days on which you were admitted to Schengen territory. Pure airside non-entry stops are omitted.
