Cruise ship and Mediterranean coastline
Edge cases

Cruises, Andorra and Monaco

Two itineraries create more confusion than almost anything else: multi-country cruises and microstate side trips. Neither creates a legal loophole out of the 90/180 limit.

Cruise port calls

When the ship is in a Schengen port, or you go ashore in a Schengen state, treat that calendar day as presence. A sailing that visits Genoa, Marseille and Barcelona on three successive days typically uses three days, even if you sleep on board. Embarkation and disembarkation days count if they involve Schengen territory.

Days at sea

Time on the open sea between ports is generally outside the Area. Do not invent sea days as “free” padding inside a port-heavy week — the port days still add up.

Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City

These territories are not Schengen member states in the same way France or Germany are. They also lack systematic passport controls with their neighbours. Immigration practice and advisory consensus treat days spent there as Schengen short-stay days. A long stay based in Andorra is not a clever reset; it is still presence for practical counting.

Example

You spend 80 days in Spain, then 10 days in Andorra. Do not plan a fresh 90 in France the next morning. Those Andorra days sit in the same practical pot.

Starting or ending outside Schengen

A cruise that begins in Southampton and later calls at Lisbon enters Schengen at the first Portuguese (or other Schengen) call. UK days before that do not count; the Lisbon day does.

Log every shore day. If a port is skipped because of weather, remove that day. The calculator is only as honest as the itinerary you feed it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Monaco give me extra days?

No. Treat Monaco days as Schengen presence for 90/180 planning.

What if I never leave the ship in port?

Port presence is still usually treated as presence in that country. Do not assume a technicality saves the day.

Are Turkish ports a reset?

Türkiye is outside Schengen. Days there do not add to the 90 — and do not erase earlier Schengen days.
