Schengen Passport Validity Rules

Plenty of travellers confuse the 90/180 stay limit with passport validity. They are separate entry conditions. You can have days left in the window and still be refused boarding if the passport expires too soon after your planned exit.

The Borders Code rule

  • Validity must extend at least three months after the intended date of departure from the Schengen Area.
  • The passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years.
  • These apply to short stays of up to 90 days in any 180.
  • Six months is often an airline boarding policy or a non-Schengen country’s rule — not the Schengen legal minimum.

Work the dates backwards

If you plan to leave Schengen on 15 September, the passport should remain valid until at least 15 December. If you might extend the trip, plan against the latest plausible exit, not the optimistic one.

Example

Passport expires 1 November. You want to stay until 20 October. Three months after 20 October is 20 January — later than the passport expiry — so this exit date fails the three-month rule even though October is before 1 November.

Why people say “six months”

Some airlines apply a blanket six-month rule to reduce denied-boarding risk across destinations. Travel advisories sometimes quote six months for simplicity. For Schengen short stays, the legal text is three months after intended departure. Carriers can still refuse boarding under their own conditions of carriage, so renewing early is the practical answer when you are close to the line.

Blank pages and biometric passports

Officers and airlines may also expect unused visa pages even though stamping is largely replaced by EES. A damaged or non-machine-readable document creates separate problems. Validity maths does not fix those.

How this meets 90/180

Passport validity caps how late you can plan to leave. The rolling 90/180 count caps how many days you can be present before that exit. Run both checks: first the document, then the stay calculator.

Official wording lives in Article 6 of the Schengen Borders Code and on Your Europe’s page for non-EU travellers. When in doubt, renew before you book non-refundable tickets.

Check days after you check the passport

A valid passport still needs enough 90/180 room for the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is Schengen always six months’ passport validity?

No. The Borders Code requires at least three months after intended departure, and issuance within 10 years. Airlines may still apply stricter boarding rules.

Does a new passport reset my 90 days?

No. Presence is about you and the Area, not which booklet you hold. ETIAS, when required, must be linked to the passport you travel on.

What if my passport expires during a long-stay visa?

National long-stay and residence rules differ. This page covers short-stay entry conditions.
