Day-count compliance is only one entry condition. Officers may still ask why you are coming, where you will stay, how you will pay, and how you will leave. A perfect calculator result does not answer those questions.
Common requests
- Proof of accommodation (bookings, host invitation).
- Means of subsistence for the stay and return.
- Return or onward ticket, or the means to obtain one.
- Consistent story for tourism, family visit, or business meetings.
Purpose must match behaviour
Tourism with a one-way ticket, no hotel, and a laptop-heavy “meeting” schedule invites scrutiny. Family visits benefit from invitation letters and clear host details — see family-visit documentation. Business trips should look like meetings, not undeclared remote employment.
Funds
Amounts vary by member state guidance and length of stay. Bank cards, statements, and cash policies differ; carrying only a vague verbal assurance is fragile. Check the destination state’s published indications when available.
Return tickets
Flexible tickets are fine if you can show them. Open one-way travel without funds to exit is a classic refusal pattern.
Pack documents that match the trip you claimed. Then confirm the trip still fits 90/180.

Can I be refused even with days left?
Yes. Days are necessary, not sufficient.
Do I need printed hotel bookings?
Digital proof is often accepted; have offline copies if possible.
Is an invitation letter mandatory?
Not always, but it helps for family stays and can be requested.
